CHARTERED EXPLORATION
The beginning:
According to the records, Charterex appears to have started operating in June 1955, under its first Chief Geologist Dr C Friedlaender. He was followed a year later by Dr McKinnon, who was succeeded in May 1960 by Dr John Osten. Dr Peter ("Kururu") Freeman took over in July 1963, followed by Dr Fred Cornwall in June ’65, and then by Nic Smit from January 1967 until June 1970, during which period the company changed its name to Zamex (April 69).
ZAMEX
Peter Freeman returned as Chief Geologist (of
Zamex) in July 1970 and was succeeded in April 1972 by Dr John Coles, who was followed by Tom Moore (as acting CG) until January 1978 when Zamex closed. Effectively, this collection of material covers the period of almost two decades between June 1955 and January 1976.
Caption: drilling was an important part of the exploration programme - and getting the driller and his equipment to a remote site was often challenging in the extreme!
Post Jan-'78
For the record, mineral prospecting continued in Zambia under Dr Len Borsch (update required)
